6 Minute Walk Test

General Information
Background

Objectives
The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is an objective evaluation of functional exercise capacity which measures how far a person can walk in six minutes (ATS 2002). It is a global measure of multiple body systems including cardiopulmonary, vascular and neuromuscular.

Motionless

Monitoring and Safety Measures
Pulse/Heart Rate
Blood Pressure
Visual Observation
Respiratory Rate
Monitoring and Safety: Additional Information
Evaluation prior to the test to determine that it is safe (using best clinical judgment) for subject to perform the test.
Assistance Permitted
Use of assistive devices and orthotics, such as ankle braces (AFOs, SMOs) walkers, crutches, or canes are permitted. Record the use and type of assistive device or orthotic on the SD/CRF.
Restrictions
Only subjects who can walk safely without hand held assistance should be permitted to perform the 6MWT.
Instructions
Refer to the ICC 6MWT Protocol for Spinal Muscular Atrophy for detailed instructions on the conduct of the test and a list of equipment needed to perform the test.

Number of Turns Permitted
The test is performed on a fixed course, with a length of 25 meters marked on the testing room or hallway floor. Participants are instructed to walk back and forth around the cones at each end of the course. The number of turns is therefore determined by the distance travelled by each participant.
