Jackson et al elected to modify the ALSFRS in order to develop a disease-specific instrument for IBM on the basis of similarities between IBM and ALS. Questions in the ALSFRS that they thought did not apply to IBM were substituted with new questions, and other questions were modified to be more applicable.

This paper contains the IBM FRS and details validation results based upon 28 IBM patients who completed the IBMFRS at baseline and monthly for 6 months during an trial of beta interferon. The IBMFRS showed statistically significant correlations (P 0.001) with maximal voluntary isometric contraction, manual muscle testing, handgrip dynamometry, and the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) functional rating scale (ALSPRS). Compared to these other outcome measures, the IBMFRS was also the most sensitive measure of change over the course of the study.
