Objectives
The objective of the 12 minute walk test is to observe a second wind and measure the maximum distance walked in 12 minutes to assess exercise function. The test has been modified from the standard 12 minute walk test for cardiac, respiratory and cerebrovascular disease. Modification includes recording of BORG RPP scale and heart rate each minute.

Number of Turns Permitted
The patient should walk in a straight line the length of which is 20m. They should turn at each end. The number of turns will therefore be determined by the distance the person walks.
Feet
Shod
Comfortable walking shoes or trainers should be worn.
Timed Tasks
Level of Difficulty/Resistence
Self Determined
Time Allowed
Predetermined
12 minutes
Rest: Permitted/Required
Rest is Required During Test
Refer to Restrictions Below
Motion at Commencement and Time at Rest
Motionless
At the start of the test the patient should be sitting and have sat for five minutes. If necessary they should be taken by wheelchair to the start point.
Monitoring and Safety Measures
Pulse/Heart Rate

Monitoring and Safety: Additional Information
The patient is fitted with a wireless heart monitor.
Assistance Permitted
Canes and walkers are allowed if needed.
Restrictions
Patient must not let muscle pain exceed BORG level 4. This prevents contracture and together with the HR highlights a second wind at 7 minutes.
Instructions
The test can be conducted in a corridor with 20m shuttles (pre measured). The patient is asked to walk as fast as they can in 12 minutes, but they must not let muscle pain exceed BORG level 4.
Scoring Basis
Distance Travelled

Measurements
BORG RPP Scale
Heart Rate
Results
The total walking distance is the final outcome measure. Patients who walk > 800m are normal, 500-800m mild impairment, < 500m the patient is likely to have severe impairment in ADLs (activities of daily living). BORG RPP scale and heart rate are measured each minute.
